The freezer was at 70°F and its coil was iced solid.
Our technician arrived at 11:29 a.m., checked in with the manager on duty and found the ice cream case at 70°F. On the roof, the compressor contactor was pulled in while the unit was in a high-temperature alarm. Either the controller was calling nonstop or the contactor was stuck closed, so the unit was shut down while the fault was isolated.

The ice cream freezer was warm. Our technician checked in with the manager on duty and measured the case at 70°F, with the
evaporator coil inside completely iced over, a coil buried in ice cannot absorb heat, so the case keeps climbing no matter
how hard the system runs. On the roof, the condensing unit was in a high-temperature alarm condition with the compressor
contactor pulled in, holding the compressor energized when it should have been cycling off. Two things can do that: a
controller calling continuously, or a contactor stuck closed. Rather than guess, the technician shut the unit down at that point
so the fault could be isolated safely and the coil could begin to thaw.

and gained access to freezer. Upon arrival, freezer temperature was 70°F. Inspected
evaporator coil and found it completely iced over. Gained access to condensing unit and found compressor contactor
pulled in while unit was in a high-temperature alarm condition. Further troubleshooting is required to determine whether
the controller is continuously sending a call signal or if the contactor is stuck closed. Unit was shut down at this time.”

The contactor was faulty, and it was replaced on the same visit.
Further diagnosis ruled out the controller. The technician replaced the contactor and the compressor’s 30/5 MFD dual run capacitor, restarted the unit and took readings before leaving, each one photographed. No refrigerant was added or recovered, because the fault and the repair were both electrical.

Continued diagnosis settled the question: the contactor itself was faulty, remaining energized when it should have de-
energized, which ruled out the controller. The technician replaced the defective contactor along with the compressor’s 30/5
MFD dual run capacitor, brought the unit back up, and verified operation before leaving. The evaporator coil thawed and
cleared before the technician left the site. All of it happened on the one visit, the freezer did not stay down.
